Why don’t all Christians follow the Biblical diet (kosher)?

by Admin on December 29, 2008

bible diet
eyeballmouth asked:

I know only one Christian who does and he is very into Black power. Also I believe Rastafarians follow something close to it and call it i-tal. But why don’t all Christians follow the Biblical diet? Jesus did. It’s in the Bible, check out Leviticus and Deuteronomy. It seems to me that to be a good Christian, you should keep kosher! God apparently found it important enough to tell Moses about. Why????
I’m asking WHY it’s for Jews when it’s in the Bible. If Jesus said something different can you tell me where it says that so I can look?
Christians follow some other laws God told Moses, like the 10 Commandments. I guess they pick and choose which are most convenient??
No, no, animal sacrifice was only allowed in the temple in Jerusalem and that is why we don’t do it anymore… the temple fell.
Lots of people saying OT laws don’t apply anymore. WHAT ABOUT THE 10 COMMANDMENTS????

I want to be able to eat pelicans whenever I want.

Keeping Kosher is for Jews, not others.

Yeshua (Jesus) said to eat whatever we want. Nobody is to be under the law of Moses anymore, that means Jews are not to be under it anymore either.

I do not know, but that is a good question. Probably the pope said G-d changed his mind – again.

Jeanette January 11, 2009 at 9:11 am

there are a lot of things that we should be doing every second of the day to be better Christians. I am sure you would agree. I thank God every day for sending His Son to die on the cross for my sins. ( and yours too!! )

apeman605 January 13, 2009 at 6:09 am

I am a Christian and I eat what I please. That includes pork and shellfish. Diet has nothing to do with being a “good Christian”.

Here I Am January 15, 2009 at 11:41 pm

The Law of Moses, where you find the “diet” is no longer in force.
The Law was a tutor leading to Christ and when Christ died, the law became fulfilled and is no longer a command for Christians to follow.

Act 10:10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,
Act 10:11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
Act 10:12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
Act 10:13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
Act 10:14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
Act 10:15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
Act 10:16 This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.

This vision and subsequent writings in the New Testament are considered part of the New Covenant and the old dietary law is past.

The only dietary restriction to Christians are eating blood and meat offered to idols, and strangled animals. Today Christians rarely come up against meat offered to idols so the other two remain, blood and strangled animals.

Act 15:20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

melbeemills January 21, 2009 at 10:53 am

Because those things are Old Testament laws, and when Jesus died on the cross, those were replaced with repentence. (Just like the law that you have to sacrifice an animal when you sin…the cleaner the animal, the better. AND the law where you can’t mix certain cloths and materials together….) That was the standard you had to live by then and had to follow in order to be a follower of Christ. Those things have changed, though Christ has not. When He sacrificed His only son on the cross, God only required that you repent your sins before Him, and follow Him with your life, and believe in Him. That still stands today.

elyon January 23, 2009 at 6:05 pm

Because it is Old Testament law, and Christ fulfilled the law in the NEW Testment, which is why it is called “new.”
“Call nothing I have put before you unclean.”
That said, that diet is still a healthy diet for anyone. But to think it is necessary to please God is legalism. It is not anything outward that the Lord looks at, with the exception of what we are doing with the gifts and talents He gave us in the furtherance of His Kingdom. There were many other “laws” the Jews were required to obey in order to gain God’s favor in the age of law. But now praise God we are in the church age, the age of grace.

Wished I could. January 23, 2009 at 6:44 pm

If you read the vision of Peter and the ’sheet’ coming down from heaven you will find, that nothing is unclean. Christ also made it very clear it is not what goes into one that makes one unclean, it is what comes out of the mouth and heart that makes one unclean.

kosher is blessed food (by a rabi) with very strict guidelines on how the food is prepared, killed, and sold. kosher is not for a christian diet, its for the jewish religion, and people who prefer it.

Many Christians believe that the death of Jesus fulfilled the law of Moses. Therefore, Christians do not follow the laws of the Old Testament, which includes the kosher laws. Personally, I believe eating kosher foods makes a person more spiritual and do not advise anyone to eat any foods that fall into the unkosher categories, like pig, shellfish, mixing meat and dairy products, etc.

Lion of Judah January 26, 2009 at 4:28 am

Didnt Paul speak on this my saying that to not worry about what someone eats and what someone doesn’t eat?

^_^

G-unit January 28, 2009 at 8:49 am

The laws of Christianity are as consistant as the winds, the only thing that never changes is “Jesus is the Savior”

Karma of the Poodle January 29, 2009 at 12:27 am

A kosher diet is a Jewish diet. Christianity is different from the Jewish diet. Christianity is a “faith” not a rule. If you were going to follow the bible you would also have to follow the Torah as well and be called a Messianic Jew.
The teachings of the “Christ” – Jesus – was to follow the law of God – the Torah, which was Gods law of that time. As the belief of the messiah had come, many were following the miracles more than the teachings. Then the teachings were more widely accepted. But, we all know, there are very few true Christians in the sense of being the true bible follower or Messianic Jew, they believe in the teachings of “Christ” hence the name Christian rather than Messianic Jew.

Edit: JPA – apparently you have not caught up on your past century history or read any of the reasons they call themselves this. They have been around since the 19th century and have grown in popularity over the years. They are not “Jewish” in the sense but more Christian believing Judaistic practicioners of the faith. They up hold the old ways and laws of Jesus’ time and prophecies of the Christian movement. They do believe in the “bible style” diet and try to be vigilant of being “kosher”. I have a couple of friends that members of a synagogue in my state. You need to read up on their history and how they believe.

Michael K January 31, 2009 at 11:50 pm

People say, “Jesus said that we can eat whatever we want,” but the also said that in Matthew 5:18:

“because I tell you with certainty that until heaven and earth disappear, not one letter or one stroke of a letter will disappear from the Law until everything has been accomplished.”

So, Jesus said that the Biblical Law in the Torah was not supposed to be broken.

So it looks like Matthew 5:18 contradicts Acts 10:10. Who knew?

Jenny Kim February 1, 2009 at 9:17 pm

I guess you’re not too familiar with the New Testament — which contains numerous verses that supercede the Old Testament’s teachings on dietary laws.

In case you were wondering, such is NOT the case with homosexuality.

Homosexuality is condemned by both the Old Testament AND the New.

Not so with Old Testament dietary laws.

The Kosher laws are not binding on non Jews, and never have been. Of course, they are always welcome to join us in keeping kosher, but they are not obliged to.

Jesus did keep kosher, yes; he died a practising Jew. But Paul claimed that what G-d told the Israelites when he gave them the Torah at Mt Sinai, was not ‘relevant’ any longer.

Quite why Paul, a mere human, felt he had the right to overturn the word of G-d, I don’t know.

EDIT

‘KARMA POODLE’ – No such thing as “messianic jews”. There is no ‘messianic’ sect IN Judaism.

Those are Christian evangelists, who are posing as ‘messianic jews’; the Messianic movement was founded by Christian missionaries and it is funded by evangelic Churches. They have nothing to do with Judaism – they are not Jewish and they are not practising Judaism.

TO CHRIS and a few others: no, the NT does not ’supercede’ Judaism. Quite how you can say that when WE JEWS ARE STILL HERE, is quite astonishing.

Nothing ’supercedes’ the word of G-d. Nothing.

Runner 4 Life aka Nate February 5, 2009 at 5:30 pm

haha omgosh you really are retarded. if we followed the OLD TESTIMENT word for word we would be stoning sinners to death. Read the NEW TESTIMENT.

The GMC February 7, 2009 at 2:01 am

I do. I follow it out of the principal that certain foods aren’t healthy whether or not Jesus died on the cross. I don’t do it to earn salvation or remain ceremonially clean, but because God gave the advice to keep my body in tip top shape, and it is his temple. In fact, the closer we stay to the original diet of fruit, nuts, and grains, the healthier we will be.

markusbdarkus February 7, 2009 at 10:16 pm

I personally refrain from the consumption of all unclean meats as outlined in God’s Word. Thanks for asking.

Angeltress February 8, 2009 at 8:26 am

Actually, the Apostles covered this very thing in a letter to the Gentile converts to Christianity. The occasion of their writing this letter had to do with an argument as to whether or not these new converts needed to keep the law of Moses and be circumcised.
Here is the part of the letter that covers your question:

Act 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
Act 15:29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well, Fare ye well.

Let me put that in more modern terminology for you:
We are not to eat meat sacrificed to idols, or blood, or anything that has been strangled. If we know, for instance, that the roast on the table came from an animal that was sacrificed to some idol, or that the sausage contains blood, or that the chicken was strangled, we are not to eat it.
Other than that, dig in and enjoy!!

OH, and we are to keep ourselves from any kind of *** outside of Biblical marriage, as well.

Fare ye well!!

John K February 11, 2009 at 3:31 am

I don’t remember the Bible ever mentioning what Jesus’s diet was specifically and I don’t remember Jesus ever saying what foods we should or shouldn’t eat. Generally for me if an OT law is not reaffirmed in the NT then I believe it’s no longer in effect.

wilderwriter February 13, 2009 at 5:58 am

The Christian rejection of the rigid Jewish codes of behavior is derived from Paul’s teachings, but they are well grounded in Jesus’s activities. Jesus abided by most of the lifestyle requirements while he lived, but his sacrifice freed us.

You might also want to look at Matthew 15:11

Hogie February 13, 2009 at 4:44 pm

If your question had any validity, then we should be practicing the sacrifices also.

The diet laws, like the rest of the law, is found in the old covenant law. Only Israel was required to keep the conditions of that covenant. No Christian is a party to the old covenant. Christians are party to the new covenant, and there is no such requirement(s) under the new covenant.

What you eat or do not eat is not going to make you a better person.

.

Bluebird February 16, 2009 at 9:47 am

because you dont need to.
in the OT God had a specific diet for the ppl of that time.
but if you read the new testament you will find that all food is blessed to our body by God’s word and prayer.
we still need to look after our temple and eat well of course. concider this scripture:

Mark 7:18-20 (NKJV)
18 So He said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him, 19 because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?”[a] 20 And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man.

Food cannot defile us. it goes to our tummys and we **** it out hahaha.

there is another scripture that talks about blessing the food you eat by praying over it.

Most Christians do not follow these things because it was decided for them that way in the New Testament.
First of all, these laws were given only to Jews in the Old Testament. Nowhere does it say that God expects everyone to keep them.
In New Testament times, there was a problem. The first Christians were all Jews who came to believe that Jesus was the Messiah. But soon, they came to believe that this new message about Jesus that they had should be shared with people from all nations. Remember Peter and his vision? The New Testament specifically states that it was God who told them to share their belief with gentiles.
Now the problem for them was that they didn’t exactly know what to do with those people who were not Jews and came to believe in Jesus. Should they convert to Judaism (remember, at that time, the Jewish Christians still worshipped at synagogues)? Some said yes, some said no. So there was an official council set up, the first church council that ever happend. All the Apostles were present to decide about that question, whether Christians should keep the Jewish laws, like kosher etc. and become Jewish. The answer to this question was “no”. You can read the whole argument in Acts 15. That is why Christians today believe that they don’t need to keep Jewish laws like kosher, simply because they are not Jewish and because the Apostles gave them just three laws that were not related to morals (read at the end of the chapter) to follow.

One more thing … one of these threee things Christians should keep according to Acts 15 is to abstain from blood. It is because of that verse that Jehovah’s Witnesses refuse blood transfusions. However, what is meant here is to not eat blood, and not the transfusion thing. As you can imagine, blood transfusion didn’t exist at that time … just so you wouldn’t get confused with it. …. Read Acts 15 … It’s really essential.

Edit: It is not that those laws don’t apply ANYMORE but that they never applied to any other people than the Jews.
And if you look at the 10 commandments, you will find much of it repeated in the New Testament, the moral parts of it, such as honoring your parents, not stealing … well you know them. So those things definitely apply. Acts 15 is only talking about the things not related to morals.

Jesus tells us that: “What goes into a mans mouth does not make him ‘unclean’ but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him ‘unclean.’ ” (Matt 15:11) Then He goes on further and states in Matt 15:17-18 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things make a man ‘unclean.’ The book of Acts also makes mention of this: (Acts 10:11-15) He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by it’s four corners. It contained all kinds of four footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. Then a voice told him “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”
“Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.” The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” In the Old Testament Scriptures, God commanded the Israelites to abstain from eating certain foods and required them to follow the law and observe specific feasts. There were no Christians at this time, so Gods commands were only for the Jewish people. When Christ Jesus arrived, His ministry was to bring the Gentiles a ‘New Covenant.’ Expanding Gods free gift of salvation to all who would choose to believe. Gentile and Jew alike. The laws of the Old Testament Scriptures are not dismissed by Christianity. We simply believe that we are saved by Faith in Christ Jesus and that the obeying of His Laws and doing Good Deeds is apart and separate from salvation. Salvation comes first, then God changes us and enables us to follow His laws and do Good deeds. We do not take credit for obeying God or for doing the good deeds that we do, instead, we choose to give God the Glory and Praise for enabling us to do these things. We are not saved by anything we do or by anything we have done. It is only because of what Christ Jesus has already done for us that we can be found righteous in Gods eyes. God changes us, God enables us, it is not of our own power, it is of His Power, His Holiness, that we are changed. God Bless You…Peace.
